About the Artist

Artist Bio

Robin Schluter (b. 1985, Sarasota, Florida) is an American impressionistic oil painter based in Punta Gorda, Florida. Working primarily in oil on linen mounted on board, Schluter continues Florida’s vibrant plein air traditions through dramatic impressionistic depictions of local Gulf Coast landscapes and botanicals. Her paintings capture the ever-present luminance of sunlight and its dynamic effects on perception, revealing the often-overlooked beauty in everyday natural elements.

Rooted in the coastal environment of her native Florida, Schluter’s practice engages with the state’s longstanding plein air heritage. She works from both plein air color studies and her own photography, employing expressive brushwork and a keen sensitivity to light and atmosphere. Her work highlights the quiet vitality and passion of nature, encouraging viewers to reconnect with surroundings frequently ignored in modern life.

Schluter’s artworks have been exhibited regionally and are held in private collections across the United States. She maintains an active studio and plein air practice in Punta Gorda, Florida, while occasionally traveling to paint landscapes in other areas of the country. Her work remains predominantly inspired by Florida’s natural scenery, where the immediate environment continues to drive her exploration of landscape, light, and perception.

Collaborative Creation Between Me and Florida

My interest lies in local sceneries, both big and small. Nature, wildlife, and figures are where it's at.

I feel like in this busy world, sometimes we forget what beauty is all around us. Even when we live in paradise!

As a born and raised Floridian, I like to expand from the typical beach scenes and show some of the other lovely aspects of Florida. Light has a lot to do with this. I love the playing of luminance that can be captured via oil paints. It captures the attention and the heart in a way that colors can only enhance the ambience to. The Sunshine State is filled with this essence.

Color theory has always been a low-key obsession for me, even in upholstered interiors. I love to relay color in a way that flows and is realistic to eye. We see colors mostly in relation to each other, and capturing the essence of the colors is like a passionate tango between complementary colors. I like to take it a step further with considerations of the sun's light spectrum, between yellow and violet.

For landscapes, I do a plein air color study of a given scene. I also take photographs of different angles within the scene and take them back to the studio for reference. From there I can create multiple paintings.

For portraits, I like to take photographs of the subject under different lighting and with different poses. I then edit the photos to relay the features in a desired way. Then the painting commences!
